dear laurel...

ok so the other day (this isn't one of jay's "the other days" that was really three and a half months ago. it was like yesterday or the day before or something), so yeah, the other day i was chattin it up online with both skye and mollie (both of whom were at work at their "grown-up jobs" where they just seem to get to chat online all day) and skye starting telling me about s problem she was having and i was coming up with the raddest answers. i could have been some high-paid psycho-analyst or therapist or something, i was doing that good.
so i'm opening up shop - just like lucy (hey, does she have a last name?) - so step right up and spill your beans.

this is just another reason why jill sobule rules.
i'm not quite cool enough to wear this shirt - only cool enough to put a link on my blog about it.
hey scott, did you notice the shirt's from the same company that made your Tiwanaku t-shirts?

mr. feel good
last weekend, i saw ben lee at the cafe du nord, and it was just awesome. the second he got on stage, ben announced that this was an awesome night and he was feeling awesome and we were all going to have an awesome time (well, that's not exactly how he put it... his way involved multiple uses of the f-word and a sweet austrailian accent). he then told a story that somehow involved iggy pop encouraging another performer to play on stage without a shirt if he really meant business. deciding he meant (f*in) business too, ben took off his shirt, though he had a bright red piece of satiny cloth draped around his shoulders (picture a 12-year-old half-naked boy wearing a table cloth cape, which is sorta how he looked). anyway, it was awesome. everyone in the room had super big smiles on their faces - you just couldn't help it. i even managed to laugh off the fact that some bozo dropped his hardly-touched beer in my lap...

civil war in santa cruz

when i went to santa cruz last weekend, i had no idea i'd end up at a civil war reenactment. but i did. erin, mark and i walked into a lovely state park, expecting a little visit before a nice hike in the redwoods. then we saw the canvas tents of the war camp and the canons and guns and shops and, of course, the nutso reenactors - soldiers of all shapes and sizes, men, women, kids, adults and the wives and children who dress up and follow along. and then, with some serious loud boom booms, the battle began and we watched soldiers shoot at each other. the booms were loud, and we ended up covered in gun powder (as did erin's snowcone, which was quite unfortunate). the spectators were a whole other crazy sight, as they cheered and applauded and booed and filmed and photographed and drank and ate and shopped. i kept thinking of chuck palahniuk's "choke" and all the crazy stories in their reenactments.
if you'd had asked me before last weekend if i would ever go to a civil war reenactment, i would have said no... and i can tell you i doubt i'll ever go to another. but it was quite an interesting experience.
the whole weekend ruled. it was super nice and warm and lovely, and my wonderful hosts took me all over town. we ate all sorts of good foods, including some awesome afghani food, which was a first for me. and we biked all about, watching surfers and the like. and we went to a climbing gym, another first for me, and i totally totally loved it. if anyone wants to check out the climbing gyms up here with me, let me know!
ooh, and it was the first weekend of use for my new purse/bag/thing, which finally replaced my raggedy blue one that people having been making fun of for years. woohoooooooooo!!
