civil war in santa cruz

Civil War in Santa Cruz

when i went to santa cruz last weekend, i had no idea i'd end up at a civil war reenactment. but i did. erin, mark and i walked into a lovely state park, expecting a little visit before a nice hike in the redwoods. then we saw the canvas tents of the war camp and the canons and guns and shops and, of course, the nutso reenactors - soldiers of all shapes and sizes, men, women, kids, adults and the wives and children who dress up and follow along. and then, with some serious loud boom booms, the battle began and we watched soldiers shoot at each other. the booms were loud, and we ended up covered in gun powder (as did erin's snowcone, which was quite unfortunate). the spectators were a whole other crazy sight, as they cheered and applauded and booed and filmed and photographed and drank and ate and shopped. i kept thinking of chuck palahniuk's "choke" and all the crazy stories in their reenactments.

if you'd had asked me before last weekend if i would ever go to a civil war reenactment, i would have said no... and i can tell you i doubt i'll ever go to another. but it was quite an interesting experience.

the whole weekend ruled. it was super nice and warm and lovely, and my wonderful hosts took me all over town. we ate all sorts of good foods, including some awesome afghani food, which was a first for me. and we biked all about, watching surfers and the like. and we went to a climbing gym, another first for me, and i totally totally loved it. if anyone wants to check out the climbing gyms up here with me, let me know!

ooh, and it was the first weekend of use for my new purse/bag/thing, which finally replaced my raggedy blue one that people having been making fun of for years. woohoooooooooo!!

thanks for spreading the civil war cheer, loro! I had a great weekend too, and I hope you come visit again. we don't have to go to war next time (unless you want to...)

I see that you have sun. I also read your fat-phil entry about sun in March. Someday we, too, will have sun. Someday. Otherwise, I can always go to Italy and get a sunburn. You know, just to have some nice weather to complain about.

april, my dear, you grew up in LODI - you need some cooling off! and anyway, it's much nicer to snuggle up with boys when it's cold out, don't you think?? heh heh heh.

btw, is your german boy one of those fancy-lad-looking euros? does he have a mullet??

By the way, I can't believe you replaced that purse of yours...I am SHOCKED. Was there a proper burial at least?
